A Snippet of Steve Jobs x-Next Computer

After jobs was fired from Applet, he founded Next, a computer hardware/software company.

This image is screenshot of Next File Viewer application. Can you see a resemblance to iTunes?

Do people still use winamp?

I found this winamp picture while reading Designing Interfaces by Jenifer Tidwell. This is blast from past.

You know those are movable panels already? Wow, Netscape was cool.

1 User Experience You cannot get from Kindle iPhone/iPod touch

The ease of going back and forth the pages. It's common for us to go back previous pages to remeber somethi or for reference. Or sometimes we want to go fastforward then go back to the previous page again. I find difficult to do this in my iPod kindle.

Aside from the smell of the physical book, the ease of going back and forth, highlighting with a pen are stuff I cannot do easily on a kindle.

Bark in Vark

With the news of Aardvark being bought by Google, being the 'fad' user that I am, I went and check it out. Signed up for it via web, then download their application in my iPod touch.

I haven't yet what is so special about it. You post questions, you can also answer other users' posted questions. Well, it is another way to while your time away.

Yaa, I know. Lame review. I am sorry, vark just fails to excite me.

750wrods.com - Write to Know Yourself or Best Way to Waste Your Time Online

I am not a good writer. I write as my way of organizing my thought. It is a form of expression for me. I find this nifty website 750words.com. Unlike blogging, you are not pressured to structure your thoughts. It's aim is to just let you doodle your thoughts aimlessly, just anything goes.

Many times, I write posts but just leave it as draft because the thoughts are scattered. So I find a place where I can let my thoughts roam free, the 750words.com. The coolest thing about it is that give you statistics and a little interpretation of your emotions based on what you write. Cool huh!

I joined their March challenge -- the aim is to have an entry every day for the whole of March. Really, it is quite a challenge for me since I am bit busy nowadays - parenting and bug testing. But I want to see my 'horse' in the race.

So I signed up their contract, betting $10 if I cannot finish the challenge.

It is a great way to waste your time online. =)

How to Not Make Your Users Feel Stupid

I guess people behind websites or applications cannot help, unintentionally, put the fault at users when things get screwed up. But the trend now is to make the users feel good about your application, as the words of Kathy Sierra, it is about 'creating passionate users.'

Below is how firefox take a problem in their browser in a light mode, humorous way:

It is not about overindulging the end users. It is the simple rule your kindergarten teacher taught you as a kid, "Be nice."

Goodreads Application Finally in iPhone/iPod Touch

I've been looking around for a 'bookshelve' kind of application for my iPod. I have the LivingSocial application which was good at start but later on, it often crashed on me - i'm not sure if this is fixed now though.

Just out of randomness, I checked earlier the app store for some bookshelf application because if none, I am thinking of asking someone to create one for me. =)

Whatta surprise to see GoodReads finally has an iPhone app. I haven't used it that much. But hopefully it will not have te same fate of livingsocial.

Updates tab. I have Jeffrey zeldman there.

Friends tab. Aubrey, a friend of mine, is there. She currently has 107 books. Wooow.

Search tab

Explore tab

My profile. It's empty because I've been using the livingsocial for its accessibility from my iPod.

Anyhoot, sayted to fill this up!

Facebuko - Jonas Roque the Mark zuckerbeg of Philippines with a great sense of humor

I knew about facebuko.com (a spoof of facebook) for some time already. Though, I do not follow it but the humor behind it never fails to amaze me when I get to check it. It is like the 'the Daily Onion' where it twisted real news/stories into something humorous.

More than the layout design painstakingly patterned after facebook, I believe it is really the humor behind it that makes it a blast.

BlogPress Lite - blogging application

When making a blog post, I always prefer doing it from desktop or laptop because I like that I have a view on evertything. Doing a quick research is also easier from a big computer. But then now that I am back to work, I have not much time dilly dallying in front of the computer.

The only time I can tinker on my blogsss is when I am babysitting or about to sleep at night. So I want to take advantage of blogging via my iPod touch which is probably the last thing I tweak before sleeping.

I have tried using the wordpress iPhone/iPod touch application to post blogs. Then combine it with webcatcher (for screenshotting websites) to add image to my blog post. And, I think I am on my way to getting comfy blogging via my iPod.

I have 3 blogs in wordpress, and a few in blogger/blogspot. I use the wordpress app. So I'm looking for a blogger app for iPhone but found none which is created by blogger itself. But I found this blogpress app. I'm using the lite version which let's you post to blogger only. If I'm going to love this, I am going to purchase the premium version which can let you post to different blogging platform (typepad, wordpresss, joomla, drupal and others).

Owkei, I think I'm impressed with how the image is attached. I can place it in a particular place in the blog unlike in wordpress where images will all be in the bottom of the post.

CHUM.LY, Do not DO-NOT me

I found this new social network integrator application, chum.ly. I'm not really sure where I was able to know about it. I think it is still in beta stage so the site is a bit rough yet.

Since I am a sucker for any web application, I signed up for it, and the first thing that greets me is a list of DO NOTs. I mean, come on, users like me are really not that losers, right?

Google Buzz Video I LIKE

not the Google buzz application/concept. Because really the people in my twitter contact list, and friends in facebook are not in my Gmail.

The thing is with all other web application sprouting up aiming at being 'social,' I would like to keep my email away from it. Google, please leave my email alone!

Enjoy the video though!

Something to look forward to in the CMS arena, or whatever you call that platform.

Gowalla's Humor

I'm a foursquare user over gowalla for the reason that it became more accessible here in Philippines. A lot are raving about it because of its UI shiznit, the look-and-feel factor. Anyway, I am checking on it because I'm seeing a few twitter users in Philippines checking in to places using gowalla.

So I make a quick go-through of their homepage, to see what these web enthusiast were raving about the cool design of gowalla. Anyhoo, I am no web design particular person. Because I'm always function over form more than any thing.

What catches my attention with Gowalla is its humor added to their Policy part:

It says: Read our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy when your're bored.

After signing up, I get the Connect your account page. This is not something new, almost all social networking-related web applications are doing this. But I love how gowalla implemented it. It is something not forced on you, but it's not left on the sideways also.

Add Friends is also nicely put.

Twitter's Suggestion Page = Lounge Area

The twitter's Suggestion Page gives new users, especially those very new to twitter, a breathing space. I believe it is a very good way for 'confused' users to unwind and at least get familiarized with the new surrounding.
If you have a web application which is a total new concept, a 'lounge area' like Suggestion page is a good way to make your users feel comfortable before tackling the unfamiliar grounds of your application.

PBWorks User Interface Really Works

I started using PBWorks when its name was still PBwiki (which at that time means peanutbutter wiki - I forgot the story behind it). I still remember I was with Xlibris at that time -- so that must be like 3 or 4 years ago. Of course, compared to how it looks now, it was crude back then but it works.

Last year, I got back to it for my freelance writing stint -- this time its official name is PBWorks. I used to save the articles I created. So I can access my articles online easily -- wherever I am: home, work, coffee shops. What struck me most at that time is how they arrange their Help page -- it was organized and 'intuitive.' I actually tried to copy how they organized their help page for the User's manual of the application I worked on last time.

So now, on my new task, I reacquaint myself again with PBWorks. And, wow! It simply blows me away. Every thing is just nicely put -- from a tech dodo's point of view. It simply looks relax.

Mobile Version of my Blogger Blog

I currently have 2 active blogs in blogger platform, which makes me think how can I make a mobile version of my blogger sites. I also maintain 3 wordpress sites, and wordpress has some sort of built-in system that automatically reformat my websites when viewed from a mobile phone.

So I'm off now to research about mobile version of blogger sites.

Where's the Nokia N70 in Smart's MySandbox List of Compatible Phones?

I was tad disappointed when I did not see my precious ever Nokia E63 in the list of compatible HSPA Handsets for Smart Philippines' MySandbox Mobile application. Though, I'm having a gut feeling, it will still work on my E63. It makes me think what are their bases on coming up what mobile handset units should their application be compatible to. Can it be they have a statistics of the mobile handset units using their GPRS/mobile internet, and based their decision from there?

So following are the HSPA units compatible to Smart's MySandbox mobile application:

From the Nokia Camp:

Nokia 5320 XpressMusic
Nokia 5630 XpressMusic
Nokia 5320 XpressMusic
Nokia 5730 XpressMusic
Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
Nokia 6210 Navigator
Nokia 6220 Classic
Nokia 6710 Navigator
Nokia 6720 Classic
Nokia 6650
Nokia E52
Nokia E55
Nokia E66
Nokia E75
Nokia E71
Nokia E71x
Nokia E90 Communicator
Nokia N78
Nokia N79
Nokia N82
Nokia N85
Nokia N86 8MP
Nokia N95
Nokia N95-3 NAM
Nokia N95 8GB
Nokia N96
Nokia N96-3
Nokia N97

From the Samsung Camp:

Samsung SGH-G810
Samsung SGH-i450
Samsung SGH-i550
Samsung SGH-i560

The lone ranger from LG:

LG-KT610

I still revolt at the thought why my E63 is there -- it is the cheapest 3g/wifi compatible, I believe, from Nokia which is not yet phased out. On the other thought, I believe they should have read yugatech's 01/22/2010 article, 'Nokia N70 takes Most Connected Phone Crown.' Lifted from the article,
"According to the latest stats from Admob, the Nokia N70 still tops as the top handset used to connect to the web in the Philippines. This despite the fact that the model has already been discontinued for distribution."

The funnier thing is that the other mobile handset models listed as the top 10 in terms of usage internet browsing are also not listed in Smart's MySandbox application's compatible phones. Following are part of the top 10 list:

Nokia 6630
Nokia 6680
Nokia 6120c
Nokia 3110c
Nokia N73
Nokia 6300
Nokia 6600

Smart Philippines or the developer of MySandbox application must have their own reasons. But I cannot avoid to think, 'where is the common sense there?' It looks like someone forgot to do some basic research -- even just follow yugatech.
